Box Office Battle: 'Shazam' to have competition for top spot

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

'CURSE OF LA LLORONA,' 'BREAKTHROUGH' OPENING: Disney's (DIS) faith-based drama "Breakthrough," which is based on a true story, is opening this weekend, along with AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros. New Line Cinema's horror film "The Curse of La Llorona," from the producers of "The Conjuring." Both will compete for the top spot at the box office with superhero film "Shazam!," which is in its third weekend at theaters.

LULL BEFORE 'AVENGERS: ENDGAME:' The lack of any large releases this weekend and last weekend is being attributed to next weekend's release of Disney's "Avengers: Endgame," which has already broken records for pre-sale tickets and for its $200M+ marketing campaign.

OVERALL PROJECTIONS:

Shazam!: $16M

The Curse of La Llorona: $15M-$17M

Breakthrough: $13M-$17M

Little: $11M

Penguins: $5M-$7M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include CBS (CBS), Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK), Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B), Sony (SNE), and Viacom (VIA, VIAB).
